USA, Japan Clinch Final Spots for Billie Jean King Cup Finals

Posted : 14 April 2025

The United States and Japan secured the last two spots at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals with hard-fought 2-1 victories over Slovakia and Canada, respectively. In Group C, Team USA clinched their place after winning both singles matches in Bratislava, with Hailey Baptiste defeating Renata Jamrichova and Bernarda Pera edging past Slovakia’s top-ranked player, Rebecca Sramkova.

Although the Slovaks salvaged a point in the doubles after Asia Muhammad retired due to illness, the Americans had already done enough to guarantee qualification. Pera, thrilled with her win, called it one of the best weeks of her career, highlighting the strong team support and camaraderie.

Earlier in Group A, Japan overcame Canada in front of a passionate home crowd in Tokyo. The tie began with a tense three-set win for Canada’s Victoria Mboko over Ena Shibahara, but Moyuka Uchijima responded for the hosts by defeating Marina Stakusic in straight sets.

The decisive doubles match saw Shibahara team up with veteran Shuko Aoyama to face Kayla Cross and Rebecca Marino. After trading sets, the final set saw Japan break early and capitalize on mounting Canadian errors to win 6-2 and seal their ticket to the finals in Shenzhen.

With their respective wins, the USA and Japan join hosts China, reigning champions Italy, and group winners Ukraine, Spain, Great Britain, and Kazakhstan for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in September. The qualifiers consisted of six groups of three nations each, with only the group winners advancing.

Japan’s captain Ai Sugiyama expressed pride in her team’s resilience, especially in the decisive doubles, noting their determination to fight for every point. Shibahara echoed the excitement, emphasizing that their journey was far from over as they set their sights on Shenzhen.
