US Open Round Two: Top Seeds Gauff, Djokovic Set for Key Matches

The second round of the US Open kicks off on Wednesday, featuring some of the world's top tennis players vying for Grand Slam glory in New York. Defending champion Coco Gauff will continue her quest to retain her title as she faces German veteran Tatjana Maria. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic, the reigning holder, returns to Arthur Ashe Stadium for the evening session to battle fellow Serb Laslo Djere.

 

Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz are also set to compete on the main showcourts as they aim to end a 21-year drought for American men’s champions in New York. Notably, Fritz will take on Italian Matteo Berrettini, having never lost to him in their three previous encounters. Despite his strong track record, Fritz anticipates a tough match against the big-serving Berrettini, citing the close nature of their past games.

 

In women's action, Aryna Sabalenka is expected to advance comfortably against Lucia Bronzetti after a dominant performance in their only prior match. The Australian Open champion, Sabalenka, is looking to build on her strong first-round showing and secure a place in back-to-back Grand Slam finals.

 

Djokovic, who had a late finish in his first-round match, faces a potentially challenging encounter against Djere, who extended their previous New York meeting to five sets. Djokovic is keen to apply lessons from last year’s match to improve his performance and advance to the next round.
