US Open Round 1: Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Milos Raonic
Posted : 28 August 2023
In the opening round of the men's singles draw, a compelling matchup featured two former Grand Slam finalists. On one side was Tsitsipas, who had reached the final of this year's Australian Open, the other major hard-court Grand Slam.
In the opposite corner stood Raonic, a sentimental favorite and a past emblem of Canadian tennis. Raonic returned to the courts after a two-year hiatus caused by injuries during the grass-court season, marking his Grand Slam comeback at Wimbledon.
Despite his success in other Grand Slam events, Tsitsipas has yet to progress beyond the third round at the US Open. His aim was to avoid a repeat of last year's unexpected first-round defeat, which came at the hands of Daniel Elahi Galan. In recent summer hard-court matches, Tsitsipas had faced challenges, with a five-set loss to Christopher Eubanks at Wimbledon, followed by a victory in the ATP 250 event in Los Cabos, Mexico.
However, he experienced a 1-2 record in the ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati. Notably, he lost his opening match to Gael Monfils in Canada and was eliminated in the second round by Hubert Hurkacz in Ohio.
Adding complexity to this match was Tsitsipas's unfavorable head-to-head record against Raonic. The two players had met twice in 2020, with Raonic emerging victorious on both occasions. One of these matches was a 7-6(5), 6-3 win for Raonic in the semifinals of the Western & Southern Open that year. Normally held in Cincinnati, the tournament took place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center's courts due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Raonic, a four-time US Open last-16 participant (2012, 2013, 2014, and 2018), faced challenges due to his injury struggles, missing four of the six US Opens held from 2014 to 2022.
