US Open Quarterfinals: Djokovic advances, Gauff makes historic semifinal debut
Posted : 06 September 2023
The US Open quarterfinals kicked off with Novak Djokovic (2) of Serbia inching closer to his 24th Grand Slam title and fourth US Open victory by defeating Taylor Fritz (9) from the USA in a challenging match with scores of 1-6, 4-6, 4-6. Djokovic's win also marked his 47th appearance in the semifinals of a Grand Slam, setting a new record (Roger Federer follows closely with 46).
Although the 20-year-old American Fritz put up a strong fight, Djokovic maintained his impressive record against American players, securing his 30th consecutive victory since defeating Sam Querrey at Wimbledon in 2016 (with 12 consecutive wins against Americans at the US Open). Djokovic is set to face Ben Shelton (47, USA) next, who continued his remarkable journey by defeating Frances Tiafoe (10, USA) with scores of 2-6, 6-3, 6-7 (7), 2-6. Shelton, the tournament's dark horse, reached his first Grand Slam semifinal, becoming the youngest American since Michael Chang in 1992 to achieve this feat.
In the upcoming quarterfinals, Carlos Alcaraz (1, Spain) will square off against Sasha Zverev (12, Germany), while Daniil Medvedev (3) will clash with Andrey Rublev (8) in a Russian showdown.
In the women's quarterfinal opener, Coco Gauff (6, USA) advanced to her first-ever semifinal at the US Open. The 19-year-old secured victory against Jelena Ostapenko (20, Latvia) with an impressive 0-6, 2-6 win in just over an hour. This marked a historic moment for Gauff as her best performance in the tournament so far, having previously required three sets in three of her last four rounds. She is also celebrating her highest career victory at a major tournament. Gauff's achievement makes her the first American teenager and the youngest player to reach the semifinals of a home Grand Slam since Serena Williams in 2001.
Gauff's next opponent will be Karolina Muchova (10, Czech Republic), who also had a straightforward journey to her first US Open semifinal by defeating Sorana Cirstea (30, Romania) with scores of 0-6, 3-6. This marked their fourth meeting this year, with the 27-year-old Czech now leading 3-1.
In the upcoming quarterfinals, newly-crowned Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrosova (9, Czech Republic) will face Madison Keys (17, USA), while favorite Aryna Sabalenka (2, Belarus) will take on Qinwen Zheng (23, China).
