US Open Day 2 Features Top Seeds, Former Champions in Action

Day 2 of the US Open features a series of intriguing matchups, showcasing top seeds and past champions. Jannik Sinner, the Australian Open champion and top seed, will make his debut against Mackenzie McDonald.

 

 Sinner, recently cleared of any wrongdoing following a positive test for a banned substance, will seek to build on his impressive form from earlier in the season. McDonald, ranked 140th, is yet to advance past the second round at Flushing Meadows but has previously defeated Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open.

 

Carlos Alcaraz, the third seed and former US Open champion, is set to face Li Tu. The 21-year-old Spaniard, who has won four Grand Slam titles including the US Open in 2022, is returning from a challenging period, having lost his last match in Montreal to Gael Monfils and falling short in the Olympic final against Novak Djokovic. Li, making his debut in the US Open main draw, will be competing on the second anniversary of his mother's death, adding a poignant element to the match.

 

Jelena Ostapenko will take on Naomi Osaka in another highly anticipated clash. Osaka, a two-time US Open champion, missed last year's tournament due to the birth of her daughter and has struggled to regain her former top form in 2024, although she has made two quarterfinal appearances.

 

Ostapenko, ranked 10th and a past French Open champion, had a notable run at the US Open last year, and the matchup against Osaka promises an exciting contest. The two players have faced each other once before, with Osaka winning their 2016 French Open encounter.

 

These matchups highlight a day filled with high stakes and compelling narratives as players battle to advance further in the final Grand Slam of the year.
