US Open 2023 results: Tsitsipas and Ruud face shocking defeats in US Open second round

Posted : 31 August 2023
In a surprising turn of events, Grand Slam finalists Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud suffered shocking defeats in the second round of the US Open. Seventh seed Tsitsipas fell to Swiss qualifier Dominic Stricker in a marathon match that ended 7-5, 6-7 (2-7), 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (8-6), 6-3. Meanwhile, fifth seed Ruud, last year's runner-up, was defeated by Chinese player Zhang Zhizhen in a five-set encounter with a scoreline of 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2.

However, second seed Novak Djokovic remained dominant as he breezed through his match with a 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Spain's Bernabe Zapata Miralles. Djokovic's pursuit of a record-equalling 24th major title seemed smoother with the unexpected exits of Tsitsipas and Ruud from his draw section. Djokovic is set to face compatriot Laslo Djere in the next round.

Djokovic expressed his satisfaction with his performance, stating, "I still feel like I can play better but I'm happy to be back playing in New York." The Serbian player emphasized his hunger and desire to excel on the court even at 36 years of age.

American ninth seed Taylor Fritz advanced with ease, defeating Juan Pablo Varillas 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, setting up the possibility of a quarter-final clash with Djokovic. Fritz was among four American players who secured victories on the same day. Additionally, tenth seed Frances Tiafoe triumphed in straight sets against Sebastian Ofner, while 14th seed Tommy Paul mounted a comeback from two sets down to overcome Roman Safiullin.

In another development, Ben Shelton won a closely contested first set against 2020 champion Dominic Thiem. However, Thiem, who has been working his way back from a wrist injury that kept him sidelined for nearly 10 months, retired due to illness early in the second set.
