US Open's singles draws have been halved, with 64 competitors each, due to intense competition at the Billie Jean King Center.
In a swift turn of events, both the women's and men's singles draws at the US Open have been halved, transforming from full fields of 128 participants to now 64 competitors each. The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center witnessed two days of intense competition, leading to this narrowing of the playing field.
Notable names advanced to the next round on Tuesday, including former men's champions Daniil Medvedev, Andy Murray, and Stan Wawrinka. Among the women's contenders, Jessica Pegula, Ons Jabeur, and Madison Keys showcased their skills to secure their spots in the second round.
However, the tournament bid farewell to Venus Williams on Day 2, as her defeat to Greet Minnen was followed by the victorious start of Carlos Alcaraz's title defense on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Daniil Medvedev, the men's singles champion in 2021, made a commanding entrance, sweeping aside Attila Balazs with a 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 victory in just over an hour. Jessica Pegula mirrored this swift victory with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph against Camila Giorgi, consolidating her position as the No. 3 seed.
Minnen's dominant performance marked her debut on the Ashe court. The Belgian player's confident play secured a victory against Venus Williams, who struggled to find her footing. Meanwhile, Jabeur faced challenges of her own, including breathing difficulties due to the heat, yet triumphed over Camila Osorio with a 7-5, 7-6(4) win.
The Louis Armstrong Stadium featured Madison Keys' victory over Arantxa Rus (6-2, 6-4) and John Isner's triumphant display against Facundo Diaz Acosta (6-4, 6-3, 7-6(1)). Isner, acknowledging his impending retirement, expressed his gratitude to the supportive crowd and hinted at prolonging his journey.
Notable American winners on Day 2 included Sofia Kenin, Sachia Vickery, wild cards Alex Michelsen and Michael Mmoh, and Peyton Stearns. The evening slate saw victories from Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka, both securing their places in the next round with convincing wins.
While the US Open witnessed remarkable victories, it also experienced a significant upset as seventh seed Caroline Garcia was eliminated by Wang Yafan (6-4, 6-1). Garcia joins a list of Top 10 seeds exiting the tournament early, emphasizing the competitive nature of this Grand Slam event.
