Upsets at US Open as Pegula and Jabeur suffer defeats in fourth round

In the fourth round of the US Open, third seed Jessica Pegula and Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur faced unexpected defeats. Pegula, considered one of the tournament favorites, struggled through an error-ridden performance, resulting in a 6-1, 6-3 loss to fellow American Madison Keys.
Despite her previous successes on the WTA Tour, the 29-year-old has not advanced beyond the quarter-finals at any Grand Slam event, making this loss particularly disappointing.
Meanwhile, last year's US Open runner-up, Ons Jabeur, encountered a challenging match against China's Zheng Qinwen. Jabeur ultimately lost 6-2, 6-4, marking Qinwen's first Grand Slam quarter-final appearance at just 20 years old.
Her next opponent will be Belarusian second seed Aryna Sabalenka, who secured her spot in the quarter-finals with a convincing 6-1, 6-3 victory over Russian 13th seed Daria Kasatkina.
Sabalenka's triumph not only advanced her in the tournament but also propelled her to the coveted position of the new world number one, a status she will officially attain at the conclusion of the US Open. This shift in rankings was triggered by the exit of Iga Swiatek, the previous number one, in the last 16. Reflecting on her achievement, Sabalenka expressed her determination and excitement, emphasizing the significance of reaching this milestone in her career.
"I had no doubt that Iga was going to make it to the final. I was sad that she lost, but becoming number one means a lot to me," Sabalenka remarked. She acknowledged the dedication and hard work she has invested throughout the year to attain this goal and expressed her focus on not letting distractions deter her from her ultimate objectives in the tournament.
