After a protracted weather delay in Bogota, Tatjana Maria defeated Britain's Francesca Jones in the Copa Colsanitas semifinals in straight sets.
In order to get to the WTA final, world No. 817 Jones needed to defeat seeds Laura Pigossi and Nuria Parrizas Diaz first.
The 22-year-old, who has three fingers and a thumb on each hand, three toes on one foot, and four toes on the other due to a congenital abnormality, struggled to keep up with reigning champion Maria as the second seed broke early to set up a 3-0 lead.
The 66th-ranked player in the world, Maria, broke again in the following game and appeared poised to quickly win the opening set. As her opponent served out the set in 44 minutes, Jones fought back with a break of her own in the seventh game and then held to cut the lead to 3-5.
Beginning the second set, Jones, a Pro Scholarship Program graduate of the LTA, delivered a crucial hold before breaking Maria to take a 2-0 lead.
However, the seasoned German broke back swiftly in the following game, and when rain drove the players off the court, Jones had the set on serve with a score of 4-3.
The tournament's organizers said there would be no more play until at least 3.45 pm local time when the rain began to fall.
When play ultimately started, Maria regained the upper hand with a tenacious hold. She later broke Jones in the ninth game and served out the match to win 6-3 6-4.
