The round of 32 at WTT Contender Tunis 2023 presented by KIA witnessed several surprising upsets as underdogs outperformed their opponents.
In the Women's Singles, Li Yu-Jhun defeated Manika Batra in a thrilling 3-2 match. Batra initially seemed in control, but Li turned the tables by winning the second and third games.
Despite Batra's efforts to force a decider, Li maintained her lead and secured the upset victory. Li, with a 61% win rate this year, aims to improve on her previous WTT Contender performance and will face a tough challenge in her next match against Yang Yiyun.
In the Men's Singles, Harmeet Desai continued his impressive run of upsets in the WTT Series by defeating World No.11 Lim Jonghoon in a 3-2 match. Desai, coming off a career-best performance in WTT Contender Lagos, carried his confidence to Tunisia.
He showcased poise and control against Lim's agile play, ultimately emerging victorious. Desai, who is nearing his 30th birthday, appears to be entering the golden age of his career and will be a player to watch in the upcoming matches. He will face Liang Yanning in his quest for a spot in the quarterfinals.
