Zeynep Sonmez from Turkey triumphed over American Ann Li with a commanding score of 6-2, 6-1 to secure her first WTA title in Merida, Mexico, on Sunday. This victory marks a significant milestone for the 22-year-old, as she becomes the first Turkish player to win a WTA trophy since Cagla Buyukakcay achieved this feat in 2016.
Ranked 127th in the world, Sonmez needed only 70 minutes to defeat Li, who was once a top-50 player but now holds the 111th spot. Sonmez showcased her skills and determination throughout the match, demonstrating her readiness to compete at a higher level.

In the opening set, Sonmez took control by breaking Li's serve to establish a 5-2 lead and clinched the set in 42 minutes. The second set saw Sonmez continuing her dominance as she broke Li's serve three times, winning the last six games to seal her victory decisively.
Expressing her emotions after the match, Sonmez shared, "It was one of my biggest dreams. I've been working for this day for 15 years." She also expressed gratitude to her supporters, mentioning those who believed in her journey from Turkey, even at early hours.
Both players faced a busy day on Sunday due to rain delays that affected the schedule on Saturday. Li had previously fought hard to defeat Polina Kudermetova in their rain-delayed semifinal, winning with scores of 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
Meanwhile, Sonmez displayed resilience in her semifinal match, coming back from a 4-2 deficit in the first set against 17-year-old Alina Korneeva, ultimately winning 7-6 (7/5), 6-2. This comeback demonstrated her competitive spirit and readiness to face challenges head-on.
Sonmez's victory in Merida not only fulfills a personal dream but also paves the way for her future in professional tennis, inspiring other young players from Turkey to strive for success on the international stage.
