Truls Moregard and Darko Jorgic delivered an electrifying match at the WTT Champions Montpellier 2024, with Moregard emerging victorious in a hard-fought 3-1 battle (6-11, 13-11, 11-5, 11-1) that captivated the audience on Wednesday evening. The match marked the seventh meeting between the two top European players, who were tied at three wins each from their previous encounters. With Jorgic having triumphed in their last clash, he entered this round of 32 match with confidence, making a strong start by taking the first game and nearly extending his lead to two games.

 

Jorgic had a crucial opportunity to gain a commanding advantage, holding a game point in the second game. However, Moregard showcased his resilience, rallying to win the game 13-11, which shifted the momentum in his favor. After that pivotal moment, the seventh seed dominated the match, demonstrating exceptional skill and determination that left the crowd in awe. “It was tough to face him again. He had game point against me to go 2-0 up, and if he won that point, it would probably have ended 3-0 for him,” Moregard said, reflecting on the significance of the turning point.

 

With this victory, Moregard advanced to the round of 16, where he is set to face local favorite Alexis Lebrun. Acknowledging the challenge ahead, Moregard expressed, “We are playing where he was born and raised, where he’s got an incredible table tennis career, so it will be tough. I see him as the slight favorite here with all his family and friends supporting him.” In the Women’s Singles, Prithika Pavade energized the Montpellier crowd with a solid 3-1 win over defensive player Suh Hyo Won, marking her third advancement to the round of 16 at WTT Champions level. Additionally, Bernadette Szocs secured a satisfying victory over Orawan Paranang, avenging her previous loss to the Thai player.
