Posted : 12 July 2023
As part of the largest prize fund in the tournament's history, the winner of the 151st Open will be awarded £2.3 million. This represents an increase of over £300,000 compared to last year's prize of £2 million, which was claimed by Cameron Smith.
The overall purse for the tournament has risen from £11.2 million to £12.7 million. Mark Slumbers, the CEO of R&A, stated that the objective is to maintain The Open's position as the pinnacle of world golf and highlighted the nearly doubled prize fund since 2016. The upcoming Open will be held at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake from 20-23 July.
Moreover, Royal Birkdale in Southport has been announced as the host for the 2026 edition, marking the return of the sport's oldest major to Merseyside.
In addition to the increases in men's prize money, Slumbers emphasized the commitment to elevating the AIG Women's Open, with the 2022 prize fund reaching £5.6 million, a 125% rise since 2018, and Ashleigh Buhai claiming just under £850,000 as the winner.
