The battle for Table Tennis supremacy in Africa: Aruna and Assar to meet again in Kenya
Posted : 26 April 2023
The intense rivalry between Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna and Egypt’s Omar Assar will resume in Nairobi, Kenya on May 4, during the 2023 Africa Cup.
The tournament, which will run from May 4 to May 6, will take place at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, Kenya.
Aruna, who missed out on the title in 2022 due to a thigh injury, will be looking to reclaim the crown from Assar, who won 4-3 in the final.
Aruna has been in devastating form in international tournaments worldwide and is currently ranked 12th globally, making him the highest-ranked African player in the world.
Assar, on the other hand, is 33rd globally and the second-best rated player in Africa.
Dina Meshref, the current highest-ranked female African player, is also in fine form following her display at the recently concluded WTT Champions in China.
She will be up against her compatriot and defending champion, Hana Goda, who won her first continental title in Lagos last year.
Each participating country will field two players in the men's and women's events, while Egypt, as the defending champions in both categories, will nominate two players alongside the reigning champions.
Kenya, as the host nation, will present four players in both the men's and women's events, with Brian Mutua leading the East African team against the visitors.
The Kenya Table Tennis Association (KTTA), the tournament organizers, has assured stakeholders of a top-notch event, having already staged the same event in 2018.
The Africa Club Championships will precede the Africa Cup, and both tournaments will serve as dress rehearsals for the first World Championships to be held in Africa in 84 years, which is scheduled to take place in Durban, South Africa, from May 20 to 28.
