Terra Wortmann Open 2023: Tsitsipas beat Barrere in three sets in two hours and 22 minutes

Tsitsipas has a mixed record in Halle, and is not as strong on grass as he is on other surfaces. He celebrated his biggest career victory at the ATP Finals in London.
In a thrilling match at the 30th Terra Wortmann Open, the second-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas faced a tough challenge from Frenchman Gregoire Barrere.
The match lasted 2 hours and 22 minutes, with Tsitsipas eventually prevailing in three closely contested sets with a score of 6-7 (6), 6-4, 7-6 (3). Throughout the match, Tsitsipas had to overcome critical moments to secure the victory.
In the first set, Tsitsipas struggled to find his rhythm, particularly in his return game. Despite having six break opportunities, he failed to capitalize on any of them. Barrere, ranked 58th in the world, remained composed and won the tie-break 8-6, taking the set.
Barrere continued to perform well in the second set, breaking Tsitsipas to take a 3-1 lead. However, the Greek player rallied and managed to break back, eventually winning the set 6-4.
The third set was closely contested, and Tsitsipas had to fend off multiple break points when the score was 4-4. He showed resilience and saved those critical moments, eventually winning the set in a tie-break, securing the match victory.
Tsitsipas has had mixed results in Halle in the past, with early exits in 2018 and 2022. Grass is not his strongest surface, although he did win a tour title in Mallorca last year. He will need to improve his performance to avoid being eliminated in the round of sixteen against Nicolas Jarry.
Despite his challenges on grass, Tsitsipas achieved his biggest career victory at the ATP Finals in London in 2019.
