Swiatek, Sabalenka, and Rybakina progress to the third round in Montreal after an exhilarating Wednesday.
Describing Wednesday's tennis at the National Bank Open as meeting expectations would be an understatement. Both the day and evening sessions at IGA Stadium treated fans to the highest quality play, evoking a wide range of emotions.
In the opening match, world number one Iga Swiatek marked her debut in Montreal, having participated in the Toronto tournament twice before. While facing a tough challenge from 2021 finalist Karolina Pliskova, Swiatek gathered herself to secure a 7-6(6), 6-2 victory.
In the upcoming third round, Swiatek is set to face Karolina Muchova in a rematch of their June Roland Garros final. Muchova earned her place by overcoming Sorana Cirstea with scores of 7-5 and 6-4.
In other matches, Marketa Vondrousova halted Caroline Wozniacki's progress with a 6-2, 7-5 triumph. Additionally, Daria Kasatkina (10th) defeated Anna Blinkova with identical scores. Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff both advanced to the third round in straight sets. Meanwhile, Danielle Collins continued her strong performance, handing Maria Sakkari a 6-4, 6-2 loss.
On Centre Court, Elena Rybakina guided Jennifer Brady to an exit in a match that had begun the day prior but was interrupted due to rain. The scores were 6-7(4), 7-6(5), and 6-3 in favor of Rybakina.
The extra match on the center court led to a delay in the evening session, especially after Canada's Leylah Fernandez engaged in a nearly three-hour battle with Beatriz Haddad Maia in the final match of the daytime session. With the support of the crowd, Fernandez delivered an impressive performance, securing a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 victory over the Brazilian. Her next challenge will be against Danielle Collins on Thursday night.
During the evening session, Aryna Sabalenka (2nd) and Croatian Petra Martic offered spectators a captivating contrast of playing styles. Sabalenka relied on her power, while Martic employed crafty shots and slices, resulting in thrilling exchanges. Despite Martic's strong efforts, Sabalenka held her ground and advanced to the third round with a 6-3, 7-6(5) victory.
