Swiatek Powers Poland to Billie Jean King Cup Semifinal Decider Against Italy

World No. 2 Iga Swiatek fought back from a set down to secure a crucial win for Poland in their Billie Jean King Cup semifinal clash against Italy on Monday, leveling the tie at 1-1. Swiatek triumphed 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 over Jasmine Paolini in Malaga, setting up a deciding doubles match. Earlier, Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti had given her team the lead by defeating Magda Linette 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) in the first singles rubber.

 

Paolini, who had lost all three of her previous encounters with Swiatek and had never won a set, showed fierce determination from the outset. Despite being overwhelmed by Swiatek in the French Open final earlier this year, Paolini proved a much tougher opponent in this match. She took the first set after a string of strong games, including two crucial breaks of Swiatek’s serve, despite the Pole having saved two break points earlier in the set.

 

Swiatek, though visibly fatigued after her earlier victories in the tournament, managed to regroup in the second set. After failing to capitalize on three break points in the final game of the first set, she broke back in the 10th game of the second to level the match. The decider saw both players exchange breaks before Swiatek secured the victory when Paolini sent a shot long, ultimately winning 13 of the 16 break points she faced.

 

In the earlier match, Linette was outclassed by Bronzetti, who controlled much of the first set and narrowly claimed the second after Linette mounted a comeback. Linette’s loss put additional pressure on Swiatek to deliver, and she did so with a gutsy performance. With the tie now level at 1-1, all eyes will be on the deciding doubles match to determine which team advances to the final. On Tuesday, Great Britain will face Slovakia in the second semifinal.
