Swiatek loses to Ostapenko, Aryna Sabalenka takes top WTA ranking
Posted : 04 September 2023
Iga Swiatek's reign as the world No. 1 in women's tennis is coming to an end after her surprising loss to Jelena Ostapenko in the US Open fourth round. Aryna Sabalenka will take over the top spot in the WTA rankings, becoming the 29th different player to achieve this honor. For Swiatek, this transition has brought about mixed emotions.
Swiatek expressed her feelings of sadness about losing the No. 1 ranking, which she had held for an impressive 75 weeks. She acknowledged the significance of her time as the top-ranked player and emphasized that she needs to focus on tournaments rather than rankings, echoing advice from tennis greats like Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal. While she doesn't typically pay much attention to numbers, she had cherished the idea of extending her record-breaking reign. As the first Polish player to win a Grand Slam, she had already achieved a significant milestone by reaching No. 1 in the world rankings.
Sabalenka, on the other hand, sees her ascent to world No. 1 as the realization of a lifelong dream. She described it as an unbelievable feeling and an incredible reward for the hard work put in by herself and her team throughout 2023. Sabalenka also noted that this achievement places her among the elite players who have held both the singles and doubles No. 1 rankings.
As Sabalenka prepares to take over the top spot, she faces Daria Kasatkina in the fourth round at the US Open, marking an exciting chapter in her career.
