Iga Swiatek says she is "not getting expectations up" before the "tricky" Madrid Open, where she may play British No. 1 Emma Raducanu in the opening set.
The world's top-ranked Swiatek successfully defended her title in Stuttgart after taking a month off, defeating world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka in the championship match.
Swiatek is in the lead this year despite missing Madrid's games last year due to injury.
It will be her second appearance in the competition; in 2021, she made her debut but was defeated by Ashleigh Barty in the third round.
“Madrid is tricky with the altitude, so I'll see,” she said.
“I've only played twice at altitude. I may be world No.1 but I don't have as much experience in tennis as you may expect. So I'm just going to see.”
"My coach [Tomasz Witkorowski] is a guy with a lot of knowledge. So, I'm sure he's going to help me manage that properly and get used to the conditions faster than I did in 2021.
“Madrid is tricky so I'm not getting my expectations up. I just want to see how fast I can get used to the conditions. I really like the tournament in terms of the conditions and food. I'm going to eat some pulpo [octopus] for sure.”
Swiatek has the opportunity to increase her advantage at the top of the global rankings with a solid performance in Madrid because she didn't compete in the competition last year.
After a year at the top spot, Swiatek has stated that she is feeling more at ease.
