Swiatek Dominates Navarro, Eyes World No. 1 as Keys Advances to Semis

Posted : 22 January 2025

Five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek advanced to the Australian Open semifinals on Wednesday, defeating Emma Navarro in straight sets to equal her best performance in Melbourne. The Polish second seed dominated the eighth-seeded American 6-1, 6-2 in gusty conditions at Rod Laver Arena.

This victory matched her 2022 run when she reached the semifinals but fell to eventual runner-up Danielle Collins. Swiatek will now face Madison Keys, who overcame Elina Svitolina in a hard-fought quarterfinal to secure her spot in the final four.

Madison Keys, seeded 19th, is in impressive form, riding a career-best 10-match win streak after claiming the Adelaide title earlier this month. In her quarterfinal, Keys rallied from a set down to defeat Ukraine's Svitolina 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

This marks Keys' third semifinal appearance at the Australian Open, 10 years after her first in 2015. Despite her strong performances, Keys will face a tough challenge against Swiatek, who has yet to drop a set in the tournament and has conceded only 14 games in five matches.

Swiatek has been playing with remarkable confidence and poise throughout the tournament, focusing intently on her goals, including reclaiming the world No. 1 ranking. Currently held by Aryna Sabalenka, the top ranking could shift if Sabalenka loses her semifinal to Paula Badosa.

If Swiatek and Sabalenka meet in the final, the winner will leave Melbourne with both the Australian Open title and the No. 1 spot. Against Navarro, Swiatek demonstrated her dominance, breaking the American’s serve repeatedly and capitalizing on her opponent’s struggles with consistency.

Keys, reflecting on her journey, expressed pride in her ability to adapt and evolve over the years. In her semifinal run, she showcased tactical improvements, particularly in her aggressive play against Svitolina. Keys acknowledged the significance of reaching another semifinal a decade after her first and emphasized her excitement for the upcoming clash. With both Swiatek and Keys in strong form, the semifinal promises to be an intense battle for a place in the Australian Open final.
