Swiatek Breezes into Stuttgart Quarterfinals as Sabalenka Advances Without Playing

Posted : 17 April 2025

World number two Iga Swiatek comfortably advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTA Stuttgart Open with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Croatian qualifier Jana Fett on Wednesday. The Polish star dominated from the outset, breaking Fett twice in the first set and three times in the second to seal a straightforward win. The result marks a confident return for Swiatek, who had previously suffered a surprise quarterfinal exit at the Miami Open in March at the hands of Alexandra Eala.

Swiatek acknowledged the mental demands of the sport following her win, noting that success on the court requires more than just technical skill. "You need a lot of inner energy and a lot of motivation to get out every week and play as good as you can," she said. She has already lifted the Stuttgart trophy twice, in 2022 and 2023, and is now eyeing a third title which would also mark her first tournament triumph in 2025.

In other action, 17-year-old Russian Mirra Andreeva reached the round of 16 after her older sister Erika retired while trailing 6-2, 1-0 in their all-family encounter. Andreeva will now face fellow Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova for a place in the quarterfinals, as she continues to build momentum on the WTA tour.

Top seed Aryna Sabalenka progressed to the quarterfinals without playing a match, as she received a bye in the opening round and saw her scheduled opponent, Anastasia Potapova, withdraw due to injury. Sabalenka, a three-time runner-up in Stuttgart, is still chasing her first title at the event. Meanwhile, American stars Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff are both set to compete in their respective last-16 matches on Thursday.
