Iga Swiatek had to dig deep to secure her place in the semifinals of the Cincinnati Open on Saturday, overcoming the challenge of 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva with a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory. The world No. 1 needed a crucial break in the penultimate game of a match that stretched over two and a half hours to finally advance. Swiatek capitalized on her first match point as Andreeva’s return sailed long, ensuring her progression in this US Open warm-up event.
Swiatek acknowledged the tough battle, noting that despite the age difference, the level of play was closely matched. "She's 17, but I feel we were playing at the same level," Swiatek remarked. The match was tightly contested, with every point proving critical. Swiatek admitted that her initial strategy needed adjustment after losing the first set.
Reflecting on her approach, Swiatek stated that she recognized the need for tactical changes after falling behind. "I knew I could not play in the same way. I needed to put more pressure on her," she said. This adjustment involved playing more proactively and modifying her game plan to disrupt Andreeva’s rhythm, which Swiatek felt immediately improved her chances.
In the first set, Swiatek was broken early and struggled to regain control, allowing Andreeva to secure the set with an ace after two set points. However, Swiatek responded with a stronger performance in the second set, breaking for a 2-0 lead and holding on to level the match.
The decisive third set saw Swiatek break Andreeva’s serve at a crucial moment to take a 6-5 lead. With the match reaching its climax, Andreeva's return went long on Swiatek's first match point, sealing the top seed's victory.
