At the Hana Bank Korea Open, home players Back Dayeon and Jang Su-Jeong pulled off impressive upsets against Grand Slam champions Jelena Ostapenko and Sofia Kenin, respectively, in the first round.
Back Dayeon came from behind, saving a match point, to defeat No.2 seed Jelena Ostapenko 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(4), while Jang Su-Jeong defeated No.5 seed Sofia Kenin 6-1, 6-4. This marked the first time in nearly a decade that two South Koreans won their opening-round matches in Seoul, with Jang being the last to achieve this feat in 2013.
Jang's victory over Kenin was particularly noteworthy as it was her first Top 50 win since 2013 and her first against a Top 30 opponent in her career. She displayed excellent counterpunching skills and skillful drop shots, keeping Kenin at bay throughout the match. In contrast, Kenin, who had recently performed well in tournaments, struggled to find her consistency, making numerous unforced errors.
Back Dayeon, ranked No. 569, secured her first tour-level victory with a remarkable comeback against Ostapenko. After losing the first set, Back shifted her tactics towards slice-heavy defense, forcing Ostapenko into extended rallies and ultimately winning the match in a third-set tiebreak. Back will face Kimberly Birrell in the next round.
Meanwhile, No.1 seed Jessica Pegula had a smooth start, defeating Viktoria Hruncakova 6-2, 6-4. She will take on Ashlyn Krueger in the next round, setting the stage for an all-American matchup.
