Sun Yingsha returns to international tennis after winning the 2023 ITTF World Championships Finals
Posted : 22 June 2023
Sun Yingsha, the reigning champion of the 2023 ITTF World Table Tennis Championships Finals, is set to return to international action just one month after her victory.
Despite her young age of 22, Sun is the top-ranked player in the world and has been included as a wildcard entry in the upcoming WTT Contender Zagreb 2023.
With an impressive track record and recent wins at prestigious tournaments such as Singapore Smash 2023 and the World Championships Finals, Sun is considered the favorite to win the Women's Singles title.
Joining Sun as wildcard entries in the Women's Singles draw are Japanese players Miyuu Kihara and Miu Hirano, both hoping to challenge Sun's dominance. Kihara, ranked 15th in the world, has previously won a Star Contender title in 2022, while Hirano was the runner-up at last year's event in Zagreb.
The fourth wildcard entry is Hana Arapovic, a local star aiming to make a strong impression on home soil.
In the Men's Singles draw, Hugo Calderano leads the wildcard contingent. Ranked 6th in the world, Calderano has already claimed four WTT Series Men's Singles trophies, including two this year.
He poses a significant threat to World champion Fan Zhendong, who is the top seed in the draw. Another wildcard entry is Lin Gaoyuan, ranked just below Calderano, who is hungry for his second Men's Singles title of the year after a thrilling victory in WTT Star Contender Bangkok 2023.
Additionally, 42-year-old Chuang Chih-Yuan and Austrian player Daniel Habesohn have also received wildcard status for the tournament.
The WTT Contender Zagreb 2023 promises an exciting competition with top players, including Sun Yingsha, Hugo Calderano, and other wildcard contenders, vying for titles in both the Women's and Men's Singles events.
