Sun Wen continues his pursuit of securing a main draw spot in Tunisia as he successfully navigates through the first day of qualifying at WTT Contender Tunis 2023. Ranked 89th in the world, Sun faced a tough challenge against Benno Oehme.
The match was closely contested, going all the way to a decisive fifth set, with Sun emerging as the victor with a 3-2 scoreline (11-9, 9-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-5).
Although it was a commendable performance, Oehme fell just short of victory. Ranked 236th in the world, Oehme made his WTT Series debut in Tunis following his participation in 10 WTT Feeder Series events.
Despite the narrow loss to a top 100 player, Oehme gained valuable experience and is likely to return for more opportunities at this level in the near future.
For Sun, the journey in Tunisia represents a chance at redemption. In the previous year's tournament in Tunis, he was unable to progress beyond the final qualifying round, losing to Koki Niwa in four games during the Men's Singles qualifying round 3.
In 2023, Sun aims to surpass his previous performance and capitalize on his current form. His recent quarterfinal finish at WTT Contender Lagos, where he defeated 2nd seed Darko Jorgic, has given him momentum and confidence.
Fans can anticipate Sun replicating his impressive performance from Nigeria on the tables in Tunis.
Looking ahead, Sun Wen is now set to face Bastien Rembert in the second round of Men's Singles qualifying, hoping to continue his journey towards securing a place in the main draw.
