Stuttgart Open: To defend her championship, Iga Swiatek defeats Aryna Sabalenka
Posted : 24 April 2023
With a victory over Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets, world number one Iga Swiatek successfully defended her Stuttgart Open crown.
In a rematch of the final from the previous year, Poland's Swiatek upset the world No. 2 seed from Belarus 6-3, 6-4.
It was her first competition since her return from the rib ailment that prevented her from competing in the Miami Open and Billie Jean King Cup qualifications.
"I want to thank my team because it has been such an intense time," said the 21-year-old.
Sabalenka lost in the final for the third time in a row, and Swiatek became the first player since Angelique Kerber in 2015 and 2016 to win consecutive Stuttgart championships.
Since Serena Williams defeated Maria Sharapova in the 2013 French Open final, it has been a while since the top-ranked woman in the world met the second-ranked woman on clay.
Swiatek is getting ready to defend her French Open crown beginning on May 28 at Roland Garros.
