'Still Not Ready' - Nadal Skips the Barcelona Open
Posted : 18 April 2023
Rafael Nadal will skip the Barcelona Open the following week in order to focus on getting fitter for the French Open in May and June.
Since losing to Mackenzie McDonald in the second round of the Australian Open in January while suffering from a hip ailment, Rafael Nadal, 36, has missed tournaments in Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte Carlo.
He wrote on Instagram: "Barcelona is a special tournament for me, because it's my adopted club and playing at home is always a unique sensation. I'm still not ready and therefore I continue my preparation process for the return to competition."
This year's French Open, which Nadal has won a record 14 times, is held from May 28 to June 11.
Ruud is startled as Sinner fights hard to advance to the Monte Carlo quarterfinals.
Hubert Hurkacz forced Jannik Sinner to work hard, but the Italian seventh seed prevailed 3-6 7-6(6) 6-1 on Thursday at the Monte Carlo Masters to advance to the quarterfinals.
Usain Bolt, a legendary sprinter, watched as Hurkacz sprinted to a 3-0 lead before Sinner tied it up. The world number 13 stumbled at the finish of the opening set before sealing it with two ferocious first serves.
Soon after the second set started, Sinner, who had advanced to the quarterfinals in Monaco the previous year, found himself in additional trouble, but the 21-year-old came back after losing service to grab a break and even the match at 2-2.
Hurkacz improved his performance to force a tiebreak and appeared to be in charge, but the tenacious Sinner preserved a matchpoint and forced a tiebreaker. The Italian then gained the upper hand and maintained it to secure the victory as Hurkacz waned.
Casper Ruud, the fourth seed, was previously defeated 6-1, 7-6(6) by German qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff, snapping his nine-match winning streak on clay dating back to last July.
