Stefanos Tsitsipas withdraws from 2023 Laver Cup due to injury, Arthur Fils steps in for team Europe

Posted : 20 September 2023
Stefanos Tsitsipas has withdrawn from the 2023 Laver Cup due to injury, dealing a blow to Team Europe's chances. The world No. 5 was originally part of the team but had to pull out, and he has been replaced by 19-year-old Arthur Fils.

This comes after Team Europe already lost world No. 4 Holger Rune due to a back injury. As a result, world No. 6 Andrey Rublev will now be the top-ranked singles player for Team Europe, leading a team that includes Casper Ruud, Hubert Hurkacz, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Gael Monfils, and Fils.

Fils has been having a breakthrough season on the tour, reaching a career-high ranking of No. 44 and securing his first title in May. Tsitsipas' withdrawal follows a challenging summer in which he had limited success across various tournaments, including the US Open. He also couldn't prevent Greece from losing to Slovakia in the Davis Cup recently.

The Laver Cup, which starts on September 22, will see Team Europe aiming to win back the title after Team World claimed victory for the first time last year. The event will feature exciting doubles combinations, and Roger Federer, one of the co-founders of the Laver Cup, expressed his excitement about seeing superstar pairings on the court.

The absence of Tsitsipas and Rune will undoubtedly impact Team Europe's strategy and prospects in the tournament, but they will still aim to put on a competitive performance against Team World.
