Stefanos Tsitsipas announced on Friday that he has ended his long-standing coaching relationship with his father, Apostolos Tsitsipas. The Greek tennis star shared the news on social media, stating that he made the decision to maintain their father-son relationship without the added pressure of a coaching dynamic. This move came after Tsitsipas dropped a major hint about the split following his 6-4, 6-4 loss to Kei Nishikori in the ATP Montreal Masters second round, where he expressed dissatisfaction with his father's coaching approach.
Reflecting on the situation, Tsitsipas acknowledged that his frustrations during matches led to tension with his father, who had been his coach for years. He admitted that in moments of pressure and high expectations, he struggled to manage his emotions, which culminated in outbursts that surprised even himself. Tsitsipas recognized the importance of understanding his limits and the need to separate his professional and personal relationships.
Earlier in 2023, Tsitsipas briefly worked with former Wimbledon and US Open finalist Mark Philippoussis before returning to his father as his coach. However, the partnership didn't yield the desired results, as Tsitsipas has won only one title this season, his third consecutive Monte Carlo championship. The decision to end the coaching relationship was made to prevent further strain and allow Tsitsipas to focus on his career with a fresh perspective.
Although Tsitsipas has not yet chosen a new coach, he emphasized that his father will continue to be part of his team in a non-coaching capacity. The 25-year-old remains committed to his tennis journey and is determined to find a new coaching arrangement that will help him achieve his goals on the court.
