South Africa and Nigeria Draw 1-1 After Day One of Davis Cup World Group II Playoff

Posted : 02 February 2025

South Africa and Nigeria found themselves level at 1-1 after the opening day of their World Group II playoff tie at Groenkloof Tennis Club in Pretoria on Saturday. South Africa’s Philip Henning made a strong start for his team with an impressive 6-1, 6-1 win over Nigeria’s No 2, David Ekpenyong. Henning broke Ekpenyong's serve three times, asserting his dominance early and cruising to victory despite the intense heat and the nerves of his first competitive match of the year.

In contrast, South Africa’s Kris van Wyk faced a more challenging contest against Nigeria's top player, Christopher Bulus. Van Wyk took the first set 6-3 after being 5-1 up, but Bulus fought back in the next two sets to secure a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) win. Van Wyk admitted that a lack of composure during the tiebreaker ultimately cost him the match, but he remained optimistic and determined to improve in his return singles on Sunday.

Although disappointed with his loss, Van Wyk expressed confidence in the team's preparation and ability to bounce back. He stressed the importance of staying positive and focusing on areas of improvement. His outlook mirrored the overall mindset of the South African team, who are determined to win the tie and avoid relegation from World Group II.

Renault SA Davis Cup captain Pietie Norval remained optimistic about South Africa’s chances, believing that the tie was still open with the doubles match and return singles set for Sunday. Norval expressed confidence in the team's strength in doubles, suggesting that if they could win the doubles rubber and take a 2-1 lead into the singles, they would be in a strong position to secure victory and compete in the promotion playoffs to reach World Group I.
