Sophia Klee emerged victorious with a smile on her face after a thrilling match against Dragana Vignjevic on the first day of qualifying at WTT Contender Zagreb 2023. Klee's quest for a spot in the main draw continues as she secured a hard-fought 3-1 win (5-11, 12-10, 12-10, 11-5) over her Serbian opponent.
The match was a rollercoaster ride with dramatic swings, and Klee, ranked 288th in the world, faced several tense moments but managed to come out on top.
"It was honestly a crazy match. I started with a 1-0 lead, but then my opponent took a commanding 10-1 lead," shared Sophia Klee.
Klee relied on her dynamic serves and executed compact and precise forehand shots to gain control of the match. However, her mental fortitude played a significant role in her victory.
"The second set was a tight battle until the very end, tied at 10-10. Fortunately, I managed to win 12-10 and level the sets. In the third set, I had a 10-4 lead, but my opponent caught up to 10-10. I was quite nervous during those moments, but I found the strength and concentration to win that set. This momentum carried over to the fourth set, which I won much more comfortably," explained Sophia Klee.
As a finalist in the U21 category at the 2023 European Youth Championships, Klee is still striving for a breakthrough in the senior field. Her best result in the WTT Series so far was reaching the second round of qualifying at WTT Contender Nova Gorica 2022. Just one more win in Zagreb could mark a significant milestone in her career.
However, standing in her path to achieving her best WTT Contender result is Lee Eunhye. It will be a challenging test for the 20-year-old, as she will need to bring her best performance to overcome the 87th-ranked player in the world.
