Sinner, Swiatek, Monfils, and Svitolina Chase Australian Open Quarterfinal Spots

Posted : 20 January 2025

Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek are poised to push for Australian Open quarterfinal berths on Monday, while tennis couple Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina aim to continue their impressive journeys. Sinner, the defending champion, dominated his third-round match with a straight-sets victory, setting up a clash with Denmark’s Holger Rune, who endured another grueling five-setter.

Rune, seeded 13th, faces the daunting challenge of recovering quickly for their afternoon match under the sweltering heat of Rod Laver Arena, with temperatures expected to soar into the 30s. Sinner, meanwhile, remains focused, stating, “I want to raise my level in the next round match.”

Iga Swiatek, a five-time Grand Slam champion, is determined to claim her first Australian Open title and will face Germany's Eva Lys in the evening session. Lys, a lucky loser who canceled her departure flight after a stunning run to the last 16, made history as the first women's lucky loser to reach this stage since the tournament moved to Melbourne Park 37 years ago.

Swiatek, who hasn’t faced a single break point in the tournament so far, dismantled Emma Raducanu 6-1, 6-0 in the third round. Lys, ranked 128th in the world, remains unfazed, saying, “I’m just going to go out and enjoy.”

The spotlight also shines on Monfils and Svitolina, who both delivered stunning performances to reach the fourth round. Monfils, 38, upset fourth-seed Taylor Fritz in four sets, while Svitolina overcame Jasmine Paolini with a commanding third set.

The Ukrainian kicks off Monday’s action against Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova on Rod Laver Arena, while Monfils is set to face 21st seed Ben Shelton later in the day. Married since 2021 and parents to a daughter born in 2022, Svitolina expressed the significance of their mutual support, stating, “It means a lot to have someone who understands what I am going through.”

Elsewhere, eighth seed Alex de Minaur faces Alex Michelsen in a night match with a potential quarterfinal clash against Sinner on the horizon. In other matches, 19-year-old American Learner Tien, who stunned Daniil Medvedev in a thrilling five-setter, takes on Lorenzo Sonego.

On the women’s side, sixth-seed Elena Rybakina battles Madison Keys, though Rybakina is under an injury cloud due to back spasms. Meanwhile, eighth seed Emma Navarro, who has gone the distance in every match, faces ninth-seeded Daria Kasatkina in what promises to be another marathon encounter.
