Sinner, Swiatek Dominate to Secure Australian Open Semifinal Spots

Posted : 22 January 2025

Defending champion Jannik Sinner stormed into the Australian Open semifinals with a dominant performance on Wednesday, while Iga Swiatek moved one step closer to her first Melbourne crown. The Italian world No. 1 defeated Australian eighth seed Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 in an electrifying display at Rod Laver Arena.

Sinner's clinical victory set up a semifinal clash with 21st seed Ben Shelton. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic, a 10-time champion, is slated to face world No. 2 Alexander Zverev in the other men’s semifinal on Friday.

Sinner, who had battled dizzy spells in the scorching heat during his fourth-round victory over Holger Rune, returned to form in the cooler evening conditions. The 23-year-old showed no signs of fatigue against De Minaur, who has yet to overcome Sinner in 10 attempts.

The Italian is chasing his third Grand Slam title and looks to defend his Australian Open crown for the first time, following his US Open triumph last year. On the other side, Shelton earned his semifinal spot with a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) win over unseeded Italian Lorenzo Sonego. The 22-year-old American matched his best Grand Slam performance, having reached the US Open semifinals in 2023.

In the women’s draw, Iga Swiatek demonstrated her championship potential with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory over American eighth seed Emma Navarro. The world No. 2 has yet to lose a set and has conceded only 14 games throughout the tournament. Swiatek now faces 19th seed Madison Keys in the semifinals on Thursday evening.

Keys, who defeated Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in her quarterfinal match, has made it to the Australian Open semifinals for the third time, 10 years after her first. The 29-year-old American is on a 10-match winning streak after her recent title win in Adelaide.

Swiatek’s opponent, Keys, fought her way back from a set down to claim victory over Svitolina and continues to showcase her aggressive style of play. Meanwhile, Swiatek benefitted from a moment of controversy against Navarro when a questionable call regarding a double bounce went in her favor.

Despite the dispute, Swiatek remained focused, noting Keys' strong form and experience as potential challenges in their upcoming match. The other women's semifinal will feature two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka against Spain’s Paula Badosa, setting the stage for an intense battle as the tournament nears its conclusion.
