Simona Halep Withdraws from Australian Open Qualifiers

Posted : 26 December 2024

Simona Halep has decided to withdraw from the Australian Open qualifying rounds and postpone the start of her 2025 season due to pain in her knee and shoulder. The 33-year-old former world number one had received a wildcard entry for the tournament but experienced discomfort after participating in the World Tennis League exhibition event in Abu Dhabi.

This setback comes as Halep continues her efforts to reintegrate into the WTA Tour following a nine-month doping ban, which was reduced from an initial four-year suspension. Throughout the controversy, Halep has maintained her innocence regarding the doping allegations.

The two-time Grand Slam champion, known for her French Open and Wimbledon victories, faces additional challenges as injuries hinder her comeback. Halep announced via Instagram that she and her team agreed it was best to delay her season's start to focus on recovery.

Consequently, she will also miss the Auckland Classic, one of the key warm-up events for the Australian Open. Currently ranked 877th in the world, Halep aims to rebuild her ranking and form, with plans to resume competition at her home tournament in Cluj, Romania, in early February.

Halep’s withdrawal from the Australian Open qualifiers, scheduled from January 6-9, means she will miss the first Grand Slam of the year, which begins on January 12. A former runner-up at the event in 2018, Halep expressed her intention to “rest up” and prepare for her return. Her delayed start reflects a cautious approach to managing her health and ensuring a strong comeback in the 2025 season.
