Simona Halep, former world No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion, announced her retirement from professional tennis on Tuesday after a first-round loss at her home event in Cluj. The 33-year-old Romanian, who had already delayed her season due to knee and shoulder pain, was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti.
Halep reflected on her career with a mix of emotions, acknowledging that her body could no longer endure the demands required to return to her previous level of play.
In her farewell message to the crowd at the BT Arena, Halep expressed peace with her decision, stating that while she felt both sadness and joy, it was time for her to move on.
Despite her early retirement, she noted that her career was filled with achievements, including becoming world No. 1 and winning two Grand Slam titles, at the 2018 French Open and 2019 Wimbledon.
Halep also shared that her time away from the sport gave her perspective on how difficult the past 15 years had been and allowed her to embrace life beyond tennis.
Halep’s career was marred by a doping suspension in 2022 after testing positive for the banned drug roxadustat at the US Open, although her four-year ban was reduced to nine months following an appeal.
Throughout her suspension, Halep maintained that she had unknowingly taken the substance, blaming contaminated supplements for the positive test. Despite the setback, she emphasized that she was mentally unaffected by the ordeal, and with her retirement, she now looks forward to enjoying life outside of tennis.
