The Bayelsa State Table Tennis Association has concluded plans to renovate the table tennis hall within the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa, the state capital.
The chairman of the association, Ama-ebi Ebikpolade, made this revelation as the team prepares ahead of the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, next year.
Ebikpolade stated that the renovation would last a minimum of two weeks, along with several upgrades to enhance the hall’s utility, compliance with international standards, and overall functionality for athlete use.
"The scope of the work will include padding the walls with finished wood to address the recurring issue of wall stains, which has necessitated repainting every six months.
"The use of finished wood will offer more durable aesthetics to reduce maintenance costs, and solar power will be installed to allow athletes to train for extended hours.
"The hall’s floor will be covered with high-performance flooring approved by the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) and the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), with a thickness of 4.5mm.
"The gate at the entrance of the hall will be replaced to safeguard the upgraded facilities, which include ITTF-approved table boards and other equipment."
The NTTF South-South zonal representative stated that upon completion of the renovation, he would donate a STAG Americas 16 tournament ITTF-approved table to ensure that athletes have access to quality training.
He also hinted that, immediately after the renovation, athletes would commence camping in preparation for the National Sports Festival slated for next year in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
He added that the hall would be allocated for the cadet, U-17, para, and deaf table tennis teams, while the seniors would be moved to the newly constructed fortress built by the Bayelsa State Table Tennis Association (BYSTTA).
