World number one Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the Stuttgart Open semi-finals with a comfortable 6-4, 6-1 victory over Elise Mertens, following a bye and walkover to reach the quarterfinals. After struggling to find her rhythm, Sabalenka responded to a break by Mertens to seal nine of the final ten games. Sabalenka, a three-time beaten finalist at this event, will now face either Coco Gauff or Jasmine Paolini in the semis.
However, Sabalenka's path to the final will not include Iga Swiatek, who suffered her sixth consecutive loss to Jelena Ostapenko. Ostapenko won 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in a thrilling encounter, continuing her dominance over Swiatek, including her first victory over the Polish star on clay.
Despite Swiatek's impressive 11-1 record on Stuttgart's clay, Ostapenko's powerful game took control after the first set, with the Latvian winning 12 of the first 15 points in the deciding set.
Elsewhere, Ekaterina Alexandrova continued her strong run, defeating third seed Jessica Pegula 6-0, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals. Pegula, who had a strong run earlier in the season with a final at the Miami Open and a title in Charleston, struggled against Alexandrova, who has now secured five top-10 victories in 2025. Alexandrova will face Ostapenko in the next round.
