Sabalenka, Gauff, and Fritz Advance as Indian Wells Action Heats Up

Posted : 11 March 2025

Aryna Sabalenka powered past Lucia Bronzetti with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory to secure her place in the Indian Wells last 16. Despite the seemingly straightforward scoreline, Sabalenka admitted the windy conditions and her opponent’s determination made it a challenging match. She expressed satisfaction with her performance and now prepares to face British lucky loser Sonay Kartal in the next round.

Meanwhile, Madison Keys battled through a tough three-setter against Elise Mertens, overcoming missed match points to eventually prevail 6-2, 6-7 (8/10), 6-4.

Coco Gauff also advanced with a hard-fought 7-6 (7/1), 6-2 win over Maria Sakkari, avenging her semifinal loss to the Greek player from last year. After struggling with 21 double faults in her previous match, Gauff improved significantly but still had a shaky finish, committing six double faults in the final game before sealing the victory. She now faces Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, who defeated Diana Shnaider in straight sets.

Elsewhere, Carlos Alcaraz continued his campaign for a third consecutive Indian Wells title, taking on Canada’s Denis Shapovalov in the night session.

On the men’s side, Taylor Fritz had to dig deep to overcome Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo, rallying from a set down to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. The world No. 4, who won the title in 2022, remains the highest-ranked American in the draw and will now face Britain’s Jack Draper.

Draper, the 14th seed, overcame Jenson Brooksby in straight sets, displaying strong resilience. Meanwhile, Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo ended the run of Dutch lucky loser Botic van de Zandschulp, securing a 6-3, 6-4 victory to set up a clash with ninth-seeded Alex De Minaur, who breezed past Hubert Hurkacz.

With Alexander Zverev’s early exit and Jannik Sinner serving a three-month suspension, the men’s draw has opened up significantly. Alcaraz, aiming to join Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic as a three-time consecutive champion at Indian Wells, remains the tournament favorite. As the competition intensifies, both the ATP and WTA fields promise exciting matchups in the coming rounds.
