Sabalenka and Swiatek set for clash at WTA Finals

Posted : 01 November 2024

Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek are poised to face off in a crucial battle for the year-end number one ranking at the upcoming WTA Finals, set to begin in Riyadh on Saturday. This tournament holds significant importance as it will ultimately determine the top spot in women’s tennis for the season. Sabalenka recently reclaimed the top position, an unexpected turn of events that came about after Swiatek lost points due to not meeting certain mandatory tournament requirements this season. As a result, Sabalenka enters the competition as the number one seed.

The Belarusian star is particularly focused on securing her status at the pinnacle of the rankings. She aims to avoid a repeat of last season’s dramatic conclusion, where she lost her number one ranking during the final week of the year as Swiatek claimed the WTA Finals title. This time around, Sabalenka is determined to maintain her lead and finish the year on top, showcasing her competitive spirit.

In 2024, Sabalenka has achieved remarkable success, including winning two Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and the US Open. She also celebrated a significant milestone last month by clinching her third consecutive trophy at the Wuhan Open. Surprised by her unexpected rise to the top of the rankings just before the WTA Finals, she expressed her astonishment at how the situation unfolded. “I was like, ‘How, what happened? Where did she lose those 100 points?’ I didn’t expect that,” Sabalenka shared with reporters in Riyadh, reflecting on her journey to the top.

When she learned of her new ranking, her boyfriend was the one to break the news to her, and her initial reaction was one of disbelief. “I woke up that morning and my boyfriend was like, ‘Congrats, you became world number one,’ I was like, ‘What? I didn’t do anything,’” she recounted. Despite her surprise, she embraced the achievement with a sense of humor, stating, “Whatever, I’ll take it.”

Currently, Sabalenka holds a solid advantage over Swiatek, leading by 1,046 points in the rankings. For Swiatek to have any chance of regaining the year-end number one spot, she must defend her title at the WTA Finals. Sabalenka is clear about her goal: “I want to finish the year as number one, then I’ll be okay. I’ll be more confident in saying I’m world number one, not just because someone lost 100 points,” she emphasized.

Meanwhile, Swiatek arrives in Riyadh after a hiatus since her quarterfinal exit at the US Open in early September. She has undergone significant changes in her camp, parting ways with her long-time coach Tomasz Wiktorowski. In her quest for a fresh perspective and new strategies, she opted to skip the Asian swing of tournaments. She is now working with Wim Fissette, who previously coached Naomi Osaka, and he will accompany her for the first time in Riyadh.

As the tournament approaches, all eyes will be on this highly anticipated clash between Sabalenka and Swiatek, with the stakes higher than ever. Both players bring their own narratives into this showdown, making it a compelling match for fans and a decisive moment in the season for women’s tennis.
