World number 10 Elena Rybakina showcased her resilience and skill to defeat Kimberly Birrell 6-3, 7-6(4), securing Kazakhstan a decisive 2-0 lead over Australia in their Billie Jean King Cup qualifier in Brisbane. Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, overcame an early break in the first set and powered through with her dominant forehand to seal the opener.
Although Birrell surged ahead in the second set with a 5-1 lead, Rybakina battled back impressively, saving a set point and eventually sealing the win in a tense tiebreak.
The Kazakhstani star praised the intensity of the match and expressed her joy in contributing to her team's success, especially in a return to Australia. This win marks her eighth in ten Billie Jean King Cup singles matches since her debut in 2021.
Earlier in the day, Yulia Putintseva delivered a commanding performance against Australian debutant Maya Joint, winning 6-2, 6-1 at the Pat Rafter Arena to give Kazakhstan an early advantage in the best-of-three contest.
The qualifiers for the Billie Jean King Cup this year feature six round-robin groups, with the winners advancing to the Finals in Shenzhen, alongside hosts China and 2024 champions Italy. In other matchups, the Czech Republic face Brazil in Ostrava, Poland meet Switzerland in Radom, and the Netherlands host Germany in The Hague.
Poland will be without world number two Iga Swiatek, who has opted to focus on training for the clay season, while the United States will compete without Jessica Pegula and Danielle Collins, both of whom withdrew from the team.
