Casper Ruud was forced to withdraw from the Mexican Open on Wednesday due to a stomach illness, becoming one of three top seeds to exit the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco. His withdrawal came just before his scheduled match against local favorite Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez, who advanced to the quarterfinals without playing.
Ruud, last year's runner-up and the tournament's second seed, had been battling the illness since the previous day and ultimately decided he was not fit to compete.
The Norwegian tennis star expressed his disappointment on Instagram, stating that he had done everything possible to recover in time for the match.
Despite his efforts, he was unable to overcome the effects of the stomach bug and had no choice but to withdraw. Ruud also shared his hope of returning to full strength in the coming days and expressed his eagerness to compete in Mexico again next year.
His withdrawal marked a challenging day for top seeds at the tournament, as Alexander Zverev and Ben Shelton also suffered early exits. While Ruud’s illness prevented him from taking the court, Zverev and Shelton were both defeated in their matches, shaking up the competition in Acapulco.
With several high-profile players now out, the tournament is wide open for new contenders to make a deep run.
