Casper Ruud, the defending Barcelona Open champion, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Hamad Medjedovic on Wednesday. The Norwegian, ranked 10th in the world, faced an early break in the first set but fought back, leveling at 4-4 and eventually securing the first set after surviving four break points. In the second set, Ruud came from behind again, breaking Medjedovic to love to seal the win.
Stefanos Tsitsipas, the third seed and 2024 runner-up at this event, also reached the quarterfinals with a 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 win over American Sebastian Korda. Both players served strongly throughout the match, but Tsitsipas never faced a break point, holding his nerve to win in straight sets.
The Greek will now face France's Arthur Fils, who comfortably defeated Spain’s Pedro Martinez 6-3, 6-2, saving the only break point he faced.
Holger Rune, ranked 13th in the world, made a strong comeback to beat Sebastian Baez 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Rune struggled in the opening set, committing 15 unforced errors, but regained his form in the second and third sets, breaking Baez three times in each.
Rune secured the win after converting his third match point, marking his first win on clay since recovering from food poisoning that forced him to withdraw from Monte Carlo.
On Thursday, world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz will take on Laslo Djere in the second round, with the Spanish star aiming for his third Barcelona Open title.
