Russia-Ukraine War: Tennis Could Have Done Better- Iga Swiatek Voiced

Posted : 17 April 2023
Iga Swiatek, the world's top tennis player, believes that a ban on Russian and Belarusian players would have made a great signal.
Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, players from the two nations were prohibited from competing at Wimbledon but were permitted to do so on other ATP and WTA Circuits under a neutral banner.

Wimbledon has since changed its mind regarding the Grand Slam competition in 2023.
Swiatek, a Pole, claims that tennis should have performed better "from the start."

Swiatek, who is currently rated first in the women's game, claimed that players have begun "approaching" her for guidance and assistance.
"I feel like tennis, from the beginning, could do a bit better in showing everybody that tennis players are against the war," Swiatek said.

"I feel they could do more to make that point and tell their views, and help us cope a bit better in the locker room because the atmosphere there is pretty tense."
As the war broke out, she continued, there was a "lack of leadership" from the WTA and ATP, and as a result, tennis was in a "chaotic situation."
