Russian sixth-seed Andrey Rublev suffered an unexpected defeat in the first round of Wimbledon on Tuesday, falling 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(5) to world No. 122 Francisco Comesana of Argentina, who was playing his debut Grand Slam match. Comesana, despite his lack of major tournament experience, displayed impressive composure and control right from the outset.
The Argentine broke Rublev early in the first set to take a decisive lead, frustrating the Russian who showed visible signs of agitation throughout the match, frequently vocalizing his frustrations to his coaching team. Rublev managed to break back early in the second set and appeared to regain momentum, employing powerful forehand shots to dominate exchanges and draw errors from Comesana.
However, Comesana resiliently fought back from multiple set points down in the second set and maintained his composure through a rain-interrupted third set. The Argentine's 21 aces underscored his dominance in crucial moments, as he showcased guile and precision to outwit Rublev in the decisive fourth set, culminating in a match-ending unforced error from the Russian.
