Rublev Hopes Long-Term Partnership with Safin Will Yield Results

Posted : 08 April 2025

Andrey Rublev is optimistic about his new coaching partnership with tennis legend Marat Safin, hoping it will be a long-term collaboration. However, the world number nine admits that the future of their working relationship depends on whether Safin enjoys the experience or finds it challenging.

The duo has teamed up for the European clay-court swing, with Rublev seeking to improve his game and mental approach with the help of the former world number one.

Safin, who won the US Open in 2000 and the Australian Open in 2005, retired from professional tennis four years later. Known for his fiery temper and emotional outbursts, Safin's struggles with controlling his emotions on the court are well documented, and Rublev, who shares similar emotional battles, has credited Safin with helping him address mental health issues.

The Russian star's notorious temper included smashing an estimated 700 racquets and even competing with two black eyes after an altercation in Moscow.

Rublev himself has faced emotional challenges on the court, such as his default from the 2024 Dubai Tennis Championships for unsportsmanlike conduct. He has also injured himself in the past due to his on-court frustration.

When Rublev learned that Safin might be open to coaching, he seized the opportunity, eager to learn from someone who had faced similar struggles. "When I found out he was looking maybe to work in tennis, it was like 'OK, I have to at least try,'" Rublev said, emphasizing how much he values Safin's guidance.

Rublev has yet to win a Grand Slam, despite reaching the quarter-finals ten times. His first tournament under Safin's guidance will be the Monte Carlo Masters, where he faces Gael Monfils. Reflecting on the partnership, Rublev shared his admiration for Safin, saying, "Marat is someone that inspired me since I was a kid."

He hopes their collaboration will be successful, but acknowledges that its future depends on whether Safin finds their working relationship fulfilling. "If he feels I'm not listening, I don't think he will waste his time," Rublev said.
