Roland-Garros final delayed by rain, but Kasatakina and Swiatek recovered; Coco Gauff and Elena Rybakina played thrilling games

Posted : 11 August 2023
As the early afternoon saw Jessica Pegula effortlessly dispatch Jasmine Paolini 6-4, 6-0, few could have foreseen the day's unfolding events, aside from perhaps meteorologists who track weather patterns.

The highly anticipated continuation of the Roland-Garros final between Iga Swiatek (1st) and Karolina Muchova (14th) commenced at 12:30 p.m. beneath a slightly overcast sky. While Swiatek dominated the opening set by conceding only one game, the second set brought about multiple shifts in momentum, rendering the contest much tighter.

Just as Muchova orchestrated a skillful break to claim the second set, the weather decided to add another layer of suspense by introducing a nearly seven-hour delay (briefly interrupted by a 10-point exchange before rain returned). A parallel delay was witnessed in the match between Daria Kasatkina (10th) and Marie Bouzkova on Court Rogers. Play eventually resumed around 9 p.m.

Kasatkina, who had maintained a clean record without losing a set throughout the week, ultimately bested Bouzkova with scores of 6-3 and 6-4. Swiatek, on the other hand, adeptly preserved the break she had secured during the brief intermission, securing a victorious continuation of the Roland-Garros final.

Rain-induced delays led to three matches being played simultaneously in order to accommodate the schedule, although each contest held the promise of exhilarating competition.

On Court 9, Coco Gauff swiftly dispatched Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets, sealing her victory with scores of 6-3, 6-0.

On Court Rogers, Elena Rybakina (3rd) took control against Sloane Stephens despite requiring an examination of her right shoulder. The Kazakh player's shoulder issue appeared to be minor, as she dropped just one game afterward, ultimately securing a 6-3, 6-3 win.

The spotlight of the night shone on the match between Canada's Leylah Fernandez and American Danielle Collins, a formidable qualifier. Collins' prowess was evident as she dominated from the baseline, reducing Fernandez's reaction time and typical strategies.

With a decisive 6-2, 6-3 victory, Collins earned her first WTA quarterfinal berth since Miami in 2022. Her next challenge awaits in the form of Swiatek.
