Roger Federer discusses generational shift in tennis

Posted : 22 September 2023
Tennis legend Roger Federer shared his thoughts on the noticeable generational change happening in men's and women's tennis. Speaking ahead of the Laver Cup in Vancouver, Canada, Federer expressed his observations on the recent successes of young stars like Carlos Alcaraz and Coco Gauff.

He believes that tennis is currently undergoing a significant transformation, and the sport as a whole is in a healthy state.

Federer, who was the first among the 'Big 3' to retire from men's tennis following the emotional conclusion of the 2022 Laver Cup in London, pointed out that this year has seen the rise of two young talents who clinched Grand Slam titles.

Carlos Alcaraz, at the age of 20, defeated Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, while 19-year-old Coco Gauff secured her first Grand Slam victory at the US Open, triumphing over Aryna Sabalenka, the Australian Open 2023 champion and world No. 1.

Reflecting on these developments, Federer, who boasts 22 Grand Slam titles and 103 titles in total in his illustrious career, emphasized that records in tennis will always be broken and stories rewritten.

He praised the recent achievements at the US Open and expressed his happiness for Coco Gauff, whom he has known since she was very young. He also acknowledged the emergence of new talents like Alcaraz and the shift in generations.

Federer acknowledged that it's a bit regretful for him not to have had the chance to play against some of these emerging talents in recent years. Nevertheless, he believes that the current state of tennis is exciting and promising, with more new players poised to challenge the dominance previously held by himself, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal in the men's game.

The tennis icon emphasized that tennis remains vibrant and captivating in the world of sports. He expressed his admiration for the unique personalities of these new players and highlighted the positive trajectory of the sport.

Regarding his own retirement, Federer revealed that he has kept busy with various activities. He mentioned his engagements with partners, his foundation's work, and his recent travels to Africa, specifically Lesotho, with his family. Federer also mentioned his involvement with the UN and his commitment to promoting early learning opportunities worldwide.

In addition to these philanthropic efforts, he remains active in the design of tennis equipment, shoes, and clothing. Federer expressed his enthusiasm for new projects and his continued engagement in various aspects of life beyond his playing career.
