Rain postpones Taylor Fritz and Andy Murray's match at Mubadala Citi DC Open

Posted : 04 August 2023
The biggest match of the day at the Mubadala Citi DC Open, featuring top seed Taylor Fritz and 15th seed Andy Murray, was postponed due to rain. The Round of 16 matchup was supposed to take place on Washington's stadium court, following another match between Frances Tiafoe and Chinese qualifier Shang Juncheng. However, the wet conditions forced the organizers to reschedule both matches for Friday.

The Fritz vs. Murray match is now set to begin not before 2 p.m. on the stadium court, followed by the Tiafoe vs. Shang match. The winners of these matches will have to play a second match on Friday evening in the quarter-finals.

Before the rain hit, three ATP Tour singles matches and two men's doubles contests were completed. Grigor Dimitrov secured a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Emil Ruusuvuori, while J.J. Wolf won 6-4, 7-6(5) against Michael Mmoh. Ugo Humbert dominated Yosuke Watanuki with a 6-0, 6-2 result.

Two men's singles matches were suspended: Jordan Thompson leading 11th seed Christopher Eubanks 5-2 and 12th seed Tallon Griekspoor leading Gael Monfils 6-4, 1-6, 1-0.

In doubles, the American duo of Mackenzie McDonald and Ben Shelton, along with the Belgian pair Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen, emerged as the winners of the day, both advancing to the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, during the Jake Paul vs. Nate Diaz news conference for their boxing match on Saturday, things got heated as both camps' security teams got into a shoving match with punches thrown. Bad blood between the two teams has been ongoing for almost a year, and the situation escalated during the faceoff.

Paul and Diaz were mostly on the sidelines of the altercation. A member of Paul's media team taunted Diaz, which added fuel to the fire. The situation also involved a security guard from Paul's team who allegedly went after Diaz. Both fighters and their respective teams were involved in the confrontation, making for a tense atmosphere.

The rivalry between the two teams has been evident in past events, and it seems to have reached a boiling point at the news conference, with tempers flaring and physical altercations taking place.
