Rafael Nadal announced on social media that he will skip Wimbledon in July to focus on preparing for the Olympic Games in Paris, which will feature clay courts similar to Roland Garros, where Nadal feels more comfortable. The decision comes after Nadal's early exit from this year's French Open, where he lost in the first round to Alexander Zverev, struggling to find his top form since returning from injuries.
Having endured a series of setbacks, including a hip problem that sidelined him for most of 2023 and a recent muscle tear, Nadal believes staying on clay until the Olympics is the best approach for his body. Expressing his regret for missing Wimbledon, where he has been successful in the past, Nadal highlighted the importance of focusing on his health and preparing for his last Olympics appearance.
Nadal, who won Olympic singles gold in 2008 and doubles gold in 2016, plans to team up with French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz for the doubles event in Paris. Before the Olympics, Nadal will continue his preparations by participating in the ATP 250 clay-court event in Bastad, Sweden, starting July 15, marking his return to the tournament after 19 years, where he previously won the title in 2005. The Paris Olympics are scheduled from July 26 to August 11, with tennis competition beginning on July 27.
