Rafael Nadal is set to make his comeback to Grand Slam tennis at the 2024 Australian Open, as confirmed by tournament CEO Craig Tiley. The 22-time Grand Slam champion from Spain has been sidelined due to a hip injury that required surgery, and he has not competed since January.
Nadal, who is 37 years old, has expressed his intention to retire at the end of the 2024 season. In addition to Nadal, former women's champions Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber, and Caroline Wozniacki are also planning comebacks following maternity breaks.
Nadal's absence from the tennis scene began when he injured his hip flexor during a second-round match at the 2023 Australian Open. He subsequently announced his withdrawal from the French Open, marking the first time in 19 years that he would miss the tournament, where he has achieved 14 of his Grand Slam titles. Nadal hinted that 2024 might be his final year in his illustrious career.
The two-time Australian Open champion secured his most recent Grand Slam victory at Roland Garros in 2022, but Novak Djokovic has since extended his lead in the men's Grand Slam tally to 24. Craig Tiley, the tournament CEO, expressed his excitement about Nadal's return and welcomed the news, referring to him as the champion of 2022.
Tiley also shared his anticipation for the return of Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber, and Caroline Wozniacki, stating that Melbourne would welcome them and their families with open arms and look forward to the next chapters in their careers. In the 2023 Australian Open, Novak Djokovic claimed his 10th title, while Aryna Sabalenka secured her first Grand Slam singles title.
